Panta Parsiana - The Persian Path

This path is one of learning about Persian language, history and culture, both ancient and modern.

Particular things we may be interested in:

Persian Language

Zartians are recommended to learn some 'Spoken Persian'. More fully we might say this is Modern Persian language written in the Latin Alphabet (rather than the Perso-Arabic alphabet that Iranians normally use). N.B. In language-learning circles this is called 'Finglish' (i.e. Farsi with 'English' spelling)

Those with an aptitude or special interest in languages could also find it useful to master the written language. They might also have a look at archaic Iranian languages used for the Zoroastrian scriptures such as Middle Persian and Avestan.

Persian History

This is particularly the history of Iran as a country and empire that has persisted for several thousand years. In addition people might also be interested in Iranians living outside the Empire, such as the Scythian nomads.

Persian Literature

Loosely speaking this includes the Zoroastrian literature written in Iranian languages particularly Avestan and Middle Persian. Apart from the Zoroastrian Gathas and Avesta, a particularly important later work is the Bundahishn.

Also the Shahnameh or 'Book of Kings' is a classic text of the Persian language, a mythical history that is part of the foundations of Persian culture.

In addition there is much classic Persian poetry which is well-regarded and popular with Persians today. In the same category we might perhaps put the works of the well-known Sufi writer Rumi-Balkhi, in particular the Masnavi, described sometimes as the Koran in the Persian language.

Persian Music

Persian classical music is captivating to the appreciative ear. Often seen as intertwined with the Persian Sufi tradition it has a great beauty to it. More modern music can also be of interest. One of our favourite singers is Mohsen Namjoo.

Persian Customs

It can also be of interest to learn about Persian customs, especially those with roots going back to pre-Islamic times.
